General tips about VSL

From Realsoft3D Wiki

  • Use (Named) levels to isolate functional parts of your material. This'll make the 'code' more readable and you can disable/swap parts easily.
    • If these parts are really useful, why not make procedures out of them?
  • RMB->Balanced layout in the VSL window makes the material tree horizontal
  • If you want to use the same material on several objects with some different values, use custom channels (which can be edited in object properties)
  • For realistic materials, make sure that the total amount of illlumination never goes over 1 (as in if color is (0.6,0.6,0.6), reflection should be under (0.4,0.4,0.4)). Most real-life materials don't even reach 0.85.
  • Use multiple specular objects for more control
